A week ago, I visited the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island, the Lost Colony in North Carolina. Even though autumn was upon us, the gardens were lovely with statues, fall color and symmetrical gardens. Located right on the water between the Outer Banks and the main land, this charming area once, the first colony settled by the English is well inhabited today with homes and shops. The colony lasted less than three years and remains a mystery worthy of discussion by the History Channel and historians alike, offers a nice get away from the beach for a day trip. There was even a wedding rehearsal going on during my visit. It is a dog friendly garden to visit. Dogs are $3.00 each, but our dogs found it too stimulating as they attempted to bark and chase the squirrels. If you are visiting the Outer Banks, take a break from the beach and visit the well shaded gardens dedicated to Elizabeth I.
